Recertification Overview

YAA Certified Hatha Yoga Teachers meet professional upgrading standards and maintain regular attendance in both classes/workshops and teaching hours.  YAA Certified Hatha Yoga Teachers must maintain up-to-date YAA membership and apply for recertification every three years in order to maintain certification status.

With further training and experience, YAA Certified Teachers may also qualify for 500-Hour Certification, as well as YAA Intermediate Teacher Status (600-hours+) and YAA Senior Teacher Status (800-hours+). See below for details.

Recertification Requirements

YAA Hatha Yoga Teacher Recertification may be obtained by submitting the following documentation to the YAA Hatha Yoga Teacher Training and Certification Committee for review and recommendation, which is then approved by the YAA Executive:

  • Recertification Application Form with fee payment.
  • Minimum total of 300 hours of hatha yoga professional development within a three year period in the following categories:
    • Minimum of 150 hours ATTENDING hatha yoga classes and/or workshops
    • Minimum of 50 hours TEACHING hatha yoga classes and/or workshops
    • The remaining minimum of 100 hours may be EITHER ATTENDING OR TEACHING hatha yoga classes and/or workshops.

In extenuating circumstances, a YAA Certified Hatha Yoga Teacher may be considered for an extension of his / her recertification period.

500-Hour Certification

YAA Certified Hatha Yoga Teachers with an additional 200 hours of hatha yoga classes and/or workshops since initial 300-Hour Certification, who have not yet met the Intermediate Teacher Status requirements (see below), may apply for YAA Hatha Yoga Teacher 500-Hour Certification.

YAA Intermediate Teacher Status (600 Hours+)

YAA Certified Hatha Yoga Teachers with 10 or more years of on-going learning and practice of hatha yoga, including 6 years or more of on-going teaching experience as a YAA Certified Hatha Yoga Teacher (or equivalent) may apply for YAA Intermediate Teacher Status (600 hours+). YAA Intermediate Teachers teach weekly hatha yoga classes that YAA Teacher Training Program students are able to attend in order to meet the 100 hour weekly hatha yoga classes requirement and work in cooperation with the TTP student’s chosen Senior Teacher.

YAA Senior Teacher Status (800 Hours+)

YAA Certified Hatha Yoga Teachers with 20 or more years of on-going learning and practice of hatha yoga, including 10 years or more of on-going teaching experience as a YAA Certified Hatha Yoga Teacher (or equivalent) may apply for YAA Senior Teacher Status (800 hours+). YAA Senior Teachers train hatha yoga practitioners to become teachers of hatha yoga in alignment with the training principles of the YAA.

The YAA recognizes YAA Certified Senior Teachers as dedicated and accomplished teacher-practitioners. As such, learning and study in a formal way is expected to be ongoing within an established practice, although the required class hours for Recertification are reduced.
